Dreaming of Stephen King
A few years ago when my Mom needed back surgery, I had a dream about Stephen King. Boy, there's nothing that screams "stephen king" in the ol' subconscious than spinal surgery for a loved one.
Anyway, in this dream, I made a speech, using a quote from King. He came up to me and asked if he could use that quote. (I think it was "The road to hell is paved with adverbs") I told him it was his own, from On Writing. He made a face and stomped away. What up, there, Kingmeister? Was I supposed to have lied? Give me a clue next time, oh writing guru.
So I woke up and helped Mom to her appointment with a neurosurgeon. His office had a huge triptych of this Hieronymus Bosch painting (The Garden of Earthly Delights, pictured above) and a silver skull with Celtic Knots on it. He's using sentences containing the words "Vertebrae" and "drill" which should NEVER be used in the same sentence, as far as I'm concerned. He walked us through Mom's entire surgery -- complete with visual aids.
I wonder if Stephen King knows about this guy. The road to hell is not paved with adverbs, but with computer simulated spinal surgery movies on DVD. And I learned an interesting tip that they never teach in school -- bones can bleed. Well, goody-gee, now I know that bones can bleed. I'm sure that bit of unasked-for info will help my dream life and writing career loads.
In the years since then, I have dreamt of Stephen King but (un)fortunately, cannot remember any of them.
