Does Insomnia Help Writers Be More Creative?

Having trouble getting inspiration?  Many writers use sleep deprivation as an inexpensive way to help induce a trance state and hopefully spark an idea or two.  But this is a terribly unreliable way to get the creative juices flowing.

Ancient peoples used sleep deprivation in order to communicate with spirits. In the modern age, artists may resort to sleep deprivation for creative inspiration. Insomnia might give a writer an initial burst of activity, but ultimately it winds up hindering the writing process. Some writers use insomnia to lessen the rational voice in their heads and open up the floodgates of dreamy creativity. Unfortunately, inspiration is not all there is to the craft of writing.
