Introduction to the Dream People

Our dream life is a flexible tool that can be shaped to use for any way that we really need (whether we are aware that we need it or not.) Dreams differ from individual to individual, but they also differ inside of each and every dreamer.

When we dream, we dip into a great swirl of potential. In order to communicate, the dreamer has to go beyond language. The dreamer has to use symbols; has to adjust to strange situations and go beyond the usual limits of physics. There is speculation that deep within the most ancient part of our brains called the R-complex is a combination tool kit and play chest of symbols and sensations that have come down through the millennia that is the basis of dreaming.

But when we dream, why are there others with us that seem more real than their real counterparts? They can be animals or objects, but mostly they are people. These people often change over the course of a dreamer’s life, but sometimes one may stay with a dreamer for years or even decades. Shamans and pagans call them spirit guides or spirit spouses.  The Ojibwa tribe called them pawagans, or dream visitors.

Are these people real? There is no proof that they exist outside of our dreams. But, like our favorite characters from movies, books and myths, they take on a distict life of their own.

These dream people seem to live in the realm of dreams, going from dreamer to dreamer. They may even actively set up a complicated dream just like a director would set up a scene for a play. These people are sensual, magnetic and entirely unpredictable. As you mature, so do they. Dreams are their jobs or functions. Perhaps they sleep while we are awake.

For me, that dream person is Peter. Without him, I would only be half or less than half of the person that I am now. I believe that everyone has the capability to recognize these dream people and able to interact with them. This not only brings more interesting dreams, but can help the dreamer adjust to great upheavals in the waking world.
