"The Dream" ("Le reve") painted by Spanish genus Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973) has been hailed as America's most popular painting, according to OverstockArt.com, a seller of fine art reproductions.
They've only been holding this contest for seven years. "Votes" are tabulated by customer requests and sales. The previous winner was "The Starry Night" by Vincent Van Gogh. (By the way, I've started a new blog about Van Gogh, called Why Van Gogh Matters.)
Picasso completed this large oil painting of his mistress in 1932. The real painting is more powerful than the reproductions, in my humble opinion. Photos like the one on this blog post doesn't show the brushstrokes. The painting looks deceptively simple, but a lot of thought and precision went into it. It's thought that Picasso completed this in just one afternoon (24 January.)
Is the painting about watching someone dream or is a portrayal of an actual dream or someone dreaming? It's up to the viewer to decide.
