Are Dreams Meaningless?

I saw a really interesting video on YouTube put out by BigThink entitled Don't Bother Interperting Your Dreams.  It's an interview with sleep psychologist Shelby Davis.  In this video, Davis suggests that dreams serve a purpose, such as fulfilling wishes or how to process memories of the day's events, instead of a deeper psychological meaning.  In other words, in dreams, a cigar is just a cigar.

I certainly think this is true for a good portion of my own dreams.  When I dream of making out with Peter, I really doubt that the dream means anything else than that.  (Hey -- today is the real Peter Gabriel's birthday, so I have to mention Dream Peter today.)  People can also get hung up on worrying about what dreams mean so that the pleasure of the dream or interesting details of the dream is lost.

But what about people who feel they are helped by dream analysis or by finding deep symbolic meanings in their dreams?  For example, if I told a therapist that I dreamt of shagging Peter Gabriel, the therapist will most likely suggest that Peter Gabriel represents the person I wish to be, so my dream is really about trying to embody Peter's qualities, so that's what I should work on.

On one hand, this interpretation helps me see that I don't have to shag the real Peter Gabriel in the waking world in order to have a fulfilling, interesting life. (That sound you just heard was a huge sigh of relief from Peter Gabriel.)  I then cultivate his qualities, such as earning a living from being creative.  This approach to dream interpretation has probably stopped a lot of would-be stalkers.

But on the other hand, I enjoy dreaming about shagging Peter Gabriel and like the dreams just for the pleasure.

In conclusion, when it comes to working with your dreams, do whatever gets your rocks off, but don't ever fool yourself into believing that you'll get into Peter Gabriel's pants.

So, what do you think?  About whether dreams are meaningless? Or are only some dreams meaningless?
